Medical Emergencies

Accidents and medical emergencies happen when you least expect them! The wise person prepares for situations before they happen. It doesn’t require much effort…but planning ahead can make the difference in life or death when something unforeseen happens.

Remember, the most important rule of medicine has always been… “First, do no harm!” So, invest the time to learn CPR techniques. Be a lifesaver and simply check the internet for basic CPR classes in your area. Know how to perform the Heimlich maneuver in case you are at home or in a restaurant when someone starts choking.

I always carry Bach’s Rescue Remedy with me in case of medical emergencies. Just a few drops will quickly calm anyone who is involved in a stressful situation or medical emergency. It also comes in a cream for cuts, bruises or wounds. Bach’s Rescue Remedy is a homeopathic preparation made from five flower essences. I’ve seen it work wonders in many, many situations…both emotional and physical.

While waiting for help to arrive, apply pressure to the wound. If there is no embedded object, use a clean cloth to cover the wound. If this cloth becomes damp, use another one on top of the original cloth. Maintain continuous pressure until the bleeding stops. Try to keep the person as calm as possible. Yes it stings, but cayenne pepper will stop bleeding. And believe it or not, a spider web will help stop the bleeding. The web contains a coagulating substance that can be applied to cuts. But, of course, be sure the spider has left the web before using it!

One thing that you might try is to place your right hand over the cut…with your left hand directly over the left hand at a 90 degree angle. Hold this position, which acts like a “jumper cable” to help control bleeding. Pressure isn’t necessary for this procedure…just a normal touch.

Any kind of sting or bite can be helped with the common weed (herb), plantain. If it’s summertime, you can simply go out into the yard and find a plantain plant. Take the leaves and crush them…exposing the liquid inside…and just rub on the sting or bite. If you are so inclined, you can make a salve from plantain and keep it year round. I simply buy Dr. Christopher’s “Stings and Bites” formula. This miracle salve is in my refrigerator…in my car and in my purse. Because you never know when it will be needed for medical emergencies.

A true story! I was visiting my family in Florida one summer and we decided to go over to the beach for awhile. We were in the process of getting out of the car when my little four year old granddaughter started screaming. She had walked just a few steps over to a tree and touched it. There were fire ants all over the tree and they immediately started crawling all over her arms and legs…viscously biting as they went. We brushed the ants off her…but she was in terrible pain. Not only were the bites stinging…but some of them were actually bleeding. I remembered that I had some plantain ointment in the car and ran to get it. Luckily I also found a bottle of water on the seat. We used the water to wash off the wounds and then applied the plantain ointment. This precious little girl stopped screaming within about 30 seconds.

What about Burns?

Burns require immediate medical attention if the burned area:

While waiting for help, it’s important to flush the eyes very well with cold water if they have been burned by fire or chemicals. Do not apply cold water or ice to burned skin…simply over with a clean cotton sheet until help arrives. Its good give electrolytes if the person can swallow. And again, Rescue Remedy cream is wonderful to apply on burns or wounds. Aloe Vera is another very helpful natural remedy. It will help relieve pain, prevent infection and promote healing. This can be from a plant in your home…or a purchased container of Aloe Vera gel. Don’t be without this miracle plant!
