Sea Buckthorn – A Unique Health Tonic

Since time began, sea buckthorn, also called seaberry and sandthorn, has been used for the preparation of innumerable herbal medicines. The deciduous shrub, found all over Asia and Europe, plays a significant role in preventing soil erosion and enhancing the fertility of soil through nitrogen fixation. The bright orange, juicy berries are edible and highly nutritious. Apart from saturated, monosaturated and polysaturated fatty acids, the fruit is a rich source of Vitamin C, carotenoids, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, flavonols, amino acids, iron, phosphorus, beta-sitosterol and dietary minerals. There are many more health benefits of seaberry. Let’s find out what makes seabuckthorn a unique health tonic.

Is good for your heart- The fruit of sandthorn contains a large amount of omega-7 fatty acid, also known as vaccenic acid. According to a study conducted by the University of Alberta in 2008, vaccenic acid helped to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in rats that were administered this trans-fat for a period of sixteen weeks. Omega-7 fatty acid present in the seabuckthorn works in the same manner in human beings. Additionally, it is also found to reduce cellular inflammation and irritation in the lining of the arteries. Thus, seaberry helps to cut down the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Helps you to lose weight- Vaccenic acid is also an effective appetite suppressant. You do not eat much when your appetite is suppressed. However, to carry out various functions properly, your body needs a specific amount of energy. Due to reduction in food intake, the body doesn’t get sufficient number of calories. As the result, the fat stored in the adipose tissue is metabolized to fill-up the gap. Owing to the oxidation of fats, your body weight starts its journey towards south.

Boosts up immunity- Polyphenols of seaberry boost up your immunity in two ways; firstly, they stimulate the production of T-cells, and secondly, they activate interleukin-2. While the former play an important part in cell-mediated immunity, the latter is a leukocytotrophic hormone, which is instrumental in preparing the body to work effectively against microbial infection. Beta sitosterol present in sandthorn helps to heal wounds, ulcers, burns and scalds speedily.

Provides dermatological benefits- Seabuckthorn works efficiently against all the signs of aging like dark circles, fine lines, wrinkles, transparent skin, visible skin pores, skin dryness, and so forth. On the one hand, it accelerates cell regeneration cycle, and on the other hands, it decelerates cell maturation process. Seaberry ensures that both the processes occur in antagonistic manner so that all the flaws of the skin disappear rapidly. In addition to alleviating symptoms of obdurate skin diseases as psoriasis, acne, eczema, it is also an efficacious suntan blocker.

Works as a powerful antioxidant- The presence of carotenoids and polyphenols make seabuckthorn a powerful antioxidant. Free radicals produced because of oxidation reaction initiate chain reactions that can either cause cell death or bring about deleterious changes in it. By blocking oxidation reactions, antioxidants prevent the formation of free radicals and thereby reduce the risk of obstinate diseases like CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) and cancer.

Folic Acid – What’s the News?

What is it and why do we need it? Folic acid is one of the B vitamins. It is water-soluble and naturally occurs in foods such as beans, yeast, mushrooms, orange juice, tomato juice and green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, lettuce, okra, asparagus. Some fruits also high in this vitamin are bananas, melons and lemons.

Federal law has required that folic acid be added to cold cereal, flour, bread, pasta, cookies and crackers since the late 1980s when it became a federal law. It is often used in combination with other B vitamins.

We need it in our daily diets to treat liver disease (alcoholism and kidney dialysis), ulcerative colitis and to prevent conditions such as anemia and the inability of the bowel to absorb nutrients properly. Alcohol consumption can prevent the body from properly absorbing this vitamin. You can prevent or reverse this deficiency by eating a diet high in the foods listed above.

This vitamin can also be used to prevent colon cancer or cervical cancer, stroke and heart disease. High homocysteine levels appear to make for a high risk of heart disease. This vitamin can be used to reduce high levels of the chemical homocysteine in our blood and therefore, prevent some of these heart problems.

This vitamin has a myriad of other uses for conditions including, vitiligo (a skin disease) restless leg syndrome, sleep problems, depression, muscle pain, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, hearing loss, eye diseases such as macular degeneration, osteoporosis and AIDS.

There are medications that have harmful side effects such as lometrexol and methotrexate; folic acid helps reduce the side effects of those medications as well as treating a disease called Fragile-X syndrome. Some dentists recommend applying folic acid directly to the gums when gum infection is present.

Women of child bearing age who are pregnant or may become pregnant should be very sure to take this vitamin to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida and to prevent miscarriage and neural tube defects. This vitamin has a part in producing the genetic material called DNA as well as the proper development of the human body.

Additionally, a study has shown that men can actually lower their risk of having sperm abnormalities by consuming levels of this important vitamin in doses of over 700 mcg daily.

From pregnancy to old age we cannot do without folic acid and its many health benefits. From preventing birth defects to aiding in conditions in the elderly it is essential.

Sore Throat in Children

Sore throat in children is very common. Experts say it is one of the leading causes to the absence of kids from school. It normally comes accompanied by a cold. Viral throat infections are stubborn and take time to clear. You have to bear in mind that even though a sore throat can clear on its own, it is a good idea if you let a doctor examine the child and recommend the right drugs that will clear the infection completely. Many parents make the mistake of not taking their children to the hospital. They buy over the counter drugs. If your child has had recurrent sore throats, you should have a test done to establish the cause. Here are some easy steps that you can take to help children who are affected by a sore throat.

Doctors recommend that the child take a lot of water. These fluids should be hot or warm. Cold ones will make the situation worse. It is a good idea to avoid very acidic drinks as well too much sugar. The fluids will help to wash out the toxins in the body and make the child again. It is not easy to convince kids to take a lot of water especially young ones who do not understand the importance. You can add honey to sweeten the drinks. There are other things that you should not forget such as telling your child to speak in a low voice. The louder they strain the voice, the worse the condition will become. You should encourage them to breath through the nose. There are some foods that can promote healing and they include fresh vegetables. Avoid foods that are too acidic.

You should see a doctor for a good diagnosis. There are throat specialists who will be able to tell the problem with your child’s throat. In some cases, home remedies might work but you should not ignore the condition if it takes time to clear. You have to see a professional who can prescribe the right antibiotics. If you let these infections go without the right treatment, the bacteria become resistant and can have some very negative effects on your child’s health with time. You should ensure that you go through the recommended treatment.

You should make sure that you get any specialized treated that is required as early as possible. The main reason to have your children tested for the sore throat infection is to ensure that you can get the right treatment. However, it would not be use if you do not listen to the doctor’s instructions. Some of the medical procedures are scary to the kids but if they are meant to give them a better health, you should not hesitate to take them through. A wide research by the medical experts has shown that there are some problems that can be easily treated in children rather waiting till they are grown up. Sore throat in children has to be treated well with the right medication.

5 Tips to Buying a Massaging Chair

A massage chair can put a significant dent in your wallet so being aware of what to look for can be a time-saver and can help you avoid any pain in the neck mistakes (couldn’t resist the pun). Everyone has his or her own set of criteria and price point in mind so this article will offer some pointers to be aware of when choosing the best massaging chair for you.

  1. How much room do I have?
Let’s be realistic. Massage chairs are not small purchases – they can be quite massive. The larger chairs, when in the reclined position, can occupy up to seven or eight feet in length which is how much room you’ll need to allow the chair to stretch out. That’s why you want to make sure that there’s enough space behind the chair without worrying about it hitting a wall behind you.A lot of people I know start out wanting to place the chair in front of their TV set but not everyone at home might be happy about that arrangement. Quite often I’ve seen these chairs end up in the bedroom or den where it wasn’t originally intended or where it might not be in the best spot to relax with a massage. In many homes, it’s an advantage to get a chair with wheels which makes it easier to roll it back to it’s storage location.
  2. Will the chair fit my body type?
We’re not all built the same and that’s why massage chairs have to accommodate for a variety of different shapes and sizes. Most quality chairs have four rollers on the back that move in three dimensions. Some chairs have more rollers and some have as few as two. The length of the massage stroke is a important since some backs are longer than others and a stroke of 28-30 inches is recommended. On a lot of chairs you can adjust the length of the rollers to suit your height which is a big advantage and some chairs can adjust to your body height automatically. This is a big convenience and some chairs do this by sensing where your shoulders are.
  3. Does the chair offer the features I need?

Most quality chairs offer the following conveniences

    -Compression
    - Steady pressure to loosen tight muscles
    - Percussion – The drumming or tapping action that soothes and relieves tired and painful muscles increasing blood flow.
    - Kneading – Somewhat similar to what a baker does to bread dough
    - Rolling – An action similar to when a masseur uses the thumbs or knuckles to alleviate tightness
    - Vibration – a feature that most handheld massagers offer
    - Heat – to further increase blood flow and comfort levels

  4. In addition, you might consider if a chair provides these next few things

    - Air compression – to massage the hamstrings and gluteal muscles as well as the calves and feet. This can be especially helpful for sufferers of diabetes as it aids in blood circulation.
    - Air compression can also be featured to massage the arms while even taking your blood pressure.

  5. Is the warranty a good one?
These massaging chairs have a lot of moving parts so you should definitely find a warranty that covers parts as well as labor.
Some common complaints include noise, so you should make sure there are no squeaks or squeals and that the warranty covers these issues as well.
You’ll also want to research whether they will service a faulty chair in a timely manner as some people have complained of wait times as long as 30 days.
  6. Could a massaging chair be hazardous for me?
Although massaging chairs offer a number of health benefits, you will want to be aware of any risks to your health so I definitely urge you to check with your doctor to make sure you don’t stay on the massage chair for too long or misuse any of the features.

Well, there you have it. Once you’ve set your budget, using some of the guidelines in this article, you should be ready to do some research and find the right chair for you. Happy shopping!

Why Physicians Need PR

Physicians, more than most professionals, need to be aware of how they are perceived by the public. A person’s health is his or her most valuable asset, and to most there is nothing more important than picking the right healthcare practitioner. No one wants to put their health in the hands of someone they don’t trust. This is one reason why (in the health and medical world) although advertising and direct mail promotions can be successful, they can also backfire. A prospective patient does not chose a physician, healthcare provider, or a hospital, the same way he or she chooses a new Smartphone or a new set of tires.

Marketing a medical practice via a print ad or TV commercial has inherent risks. A physician does not want to be viewed as though he or she is actively selling; no prospective patient wants to be sold. Patients want to see someone they trust, someone they feel is the best in the field, and that’s why a well planned public relations campaign is so very important to building a medical practice.

The healthcare field is learning how to utilize public relations and social media as ways to connect with and communicate to the public. In over two decades working in the healthcare PR field, I’ve seen first hand how important media coverage is to physicians and hospitals. We’ve placed physicians and healthcare practitioners in a wide range of media outlets including Time, Newsweek, Oprah, the Today Show, the Wall Street journal, the New Your Times, the BBC and hundreds of other local and national media outlets. Those placements have helped build practices and establish medical experts.

On its own, the media has a tendency to run with the “if it bleeds it leads” stories. That’s not only true in medicine but in all fields. It is up to physicians, hospitals and medical professionals to offer the media instructional, educational and (yes) entertaining stories; compelling anecdotal stories that offer options new approaches and also appeal to the emotions.

People turn to experts in time of need. They look for those they can trust, and being featured in Time, USA Today, the Today Show, CNN or the Wall Street Journal, helps give the public that sense of trust. In the medical field, it’s not the physician or medical center who can buy the biggest ad or run the most commercials who get patients; it’s those that can tell the most compelling and educational human-interest stories. Stories on the newest medical breakthroughs and the newest trends and studies attract media attention. Stories on restoring someone’s health or saving the life of a loved one touch a basic human chord.

To succeed in the media world, it’s important for physicians to learn know how to speak the media’s language. They need to learn how to establish themselves as the “go-to” doctor in their specialty, and to let the media know how to contact them when they need a quote about a medical issue. They also need to learn how to reach out to media outlets, establish themselves as an expert and pitch compelling medical stories. None of this was likely taught in medical school, but as more physicians are learning, as a marketing and educational tool, nothing compares with a well thought out PR campaign.

Are You the Cause of Your Pain?

When our joints or muscles ache, our first reaction may be that we worked too hard at some physical task and “it will go away”. Later when it hasn’t, we may visit the doctor to identify the cause of our pain. Unfortunately the doctor has many patients to treat and doesn’t always have the time and patience to discover the underlying problem of which the pain may be only a symptom. The doctor can help us to understand where the pain is and what hurts but many times it is up to us to figure out what is really causing the problem.

We may not realize that some of the things we do, often inadvertently, can cause our pain. Sometimes we need to thoroughly examine our behavior to identify habits or other actions that could be the culprit. This may even require us to stand beside ourselves, like an outside observer, and critically examine our activities looking for some incriminating action or habit. It could be something innocuous or even something we do subconsciously. Once we have that moment of recognition, we can quickly come to an understanding of the underlying problem and resolve it.

I say this from experience, having endured several episodes of “unexplained” joint pain that turned out to be something I was doing to me. I had elbow pain that wouldn’t go away; the joint hurt but only enough to be annoying. Finally the “aha” moment hit me when I realized that while sleeping on my side I would place my upper arm out straight in front of me and rest it on the mattress like a flying buttress. It was the constant pressure on the arm during the night that made my joint ache. Once I trained myself to sleep differently the pain magically disappeared.

I also had another experience where my knees ached. Again I had that “aha” moment when I awoke during the night and discovered the problem. For some reason I had started lying on my back in bed with my legs crossed. If I fell asleep and did not turn on my side, I would subconsciously tighten the leg muscles to keep my legs together. The long periods of muscle clenching put pressure on the knees until they ached. Mystery solved.

When we have pain in our joints, there may be a chronic condition that should be treated by a doctor. But sometimes, if we think about it, the pain is only a symptom of a habit or activity that we do to ourselves that is the real cause.

Medical Emergencies

Accidents and medical emergencies happen when you least expect them! The wise person prepares for situations before they happen. It doesn’t require much effort…but planning ahead can make the difference in life or death when something unforeseen happens.
Cheap viagra super active
Remember, the most important rule of medicine has always been… “First, do no harm!” So, invest the time to learn CPR techniques. Be a lifesaver and simply check the internet for basic CPR classes in your area. Know how to perform the Heimlich maneuver in case you are at home or in a restaurant when someone starts choking.

I always carry Bach’s Rescue Remedy with me in case of medical emergencies. Just a few drops will quickly calm anyone who is involved in a stressful situation or medical emergency. It also comes in a cream for cuts, bruises or wounds. Bach’s Rescue Remedy is a homeopathic preparation made from five flower essences. I’ve seen it work wonders in many, many situations…both emotional and physical.

  • If the medical emergency involves bleeding…always seek immediate medical attention if the wound:
  • Looks deep
  • Large enough to require stitches
  • Is “spurting” blood
  • Is caused from a human or animal bite
  • If any object is embedded
  • Involves a broken bone
  • In contact with a dirty or rusty object

While waiting for help to arrive, apply pressure to the wound. If there is no embedded object, use a clean cloth to cover the wound. If this cloth becomes damp, use another one on top of the original cloth. Maintain continuous pressure until the bleeding stops. Try to keep the person as calm as possible. Yes it stings, but cayenne pepper will stop bleeding. And believe it or not, a spider web will help stop the bleeding. The web contains a coagulating substance that can be applied to cuts. But, of course, be sure the spider has left the web before using it!

One thing that you might try is to place your right hand over the cut…with your left hand directly over the left hand at a 90 degree angle. Hold this position, which acts like a “jumper cable” to help control bleeding. Pressure isn’t necessary for this procedure…just a normal touch.

Any kind of sting or bite can be helped with the common weed (herb), plantain. If it’s summertime, you can simply go out into the yard and find a plantain plant. Take the leaves and crush them…exposing the liquid inside…and just rub on the sting or bite. If you are so inclined, you can make a salve from plantain and keep it year round. I simply buy Dr. Christopher’s “Stings and Bites” formula. This miracle salve is in my refrigerator…in my car and in my purse. Because you never know when it will be needed for medical emergencies.

A true story! I was visiting my family in Florida one summer and we decided to go over to the beach for awhile. We were in the process of getting out of the car when my little four year old granddaughter started screaming. She had walked just a few steps over to a tree and touched it. There were fire ants all over the tree and they immediately started crawling all over her arms and legs…viscously biting as they went. We brushed the ants off her…but she was in terrible pain. Not only were the bites stinging…but some of them were actually bleeding. I remembered that I had some plantain ointment in the car and ran to get it. Luckily I also found a bottle of water on the seat. We used the water to wash off the wounds and then applied the plantain ointment. This precious little girl stopped screaming within about 30 seconds.

What about Burns?

Burns require immediate medical attention if the burned area:

  • Is on the face
  • The eyes are burned
  • Swelling or blisters form
  • Covers a large area of skin
  • Is due to severe electrical shock

While waiting for help, it’s important to flush the eyes very well with cold water if they have been burned by fire or chemicals. Do not apply cold water or ice to burned skin…simply over with a clean cotton sheet until help arrives. Its good give electrolytes if the person can swallow. And again, Rescue Remedy cream is wonderful to apply on burns or wounds. Aloe Vera is another very helpful natural remedy. It will help relieve pain, prevent infection and promote healing. This can be from a plant in your home…or a purchased container of Aloe Vera gel. Don’t be without this miracle plant!

Please visit my website for many more ways to stay healthy…naturally! Medical emergencies can be very stressful, so I encourage you to prepare in advance and have items on hand that will help save the day.
