Psychological Health and Issues

I don’t know a single person who can say they have gone through life without a moment of sorrow or sadness. No one can say life is kind all the way through, and this is something that connects us a people. For some people, life is cruel, and this can often mean some will develop psychological disorders. It’s not always life that does this though; some people are born with them. No matter why you have problems, or when you first noticed them, you should know that help is out there, and it is in your best interest to find someone who cares.

There are all kinds of psychological disorders. Some come from trauma while others may come from a lifetime of problems. Sometimes things are so bad that our minds take a detour because we simply can’t handle what is happening. Sadly, some people have no idea that they may have developed psychological disorders, and this is why it is important that their friends and family take action if something is going on that doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

If you look online, you can find information about most of the psychological health disorders that are out there. You can look at symptoms and conditions, as well as get a general idea of what is going on and what can be done to help. Once you suspect someone has developed psychological health disorders, you can then seek the advice of a doctor, or get them to go to see someone who may specialize in psychological health disorders. Treatment might be simple and quick, or it may require more in depth help. No matter what happens next, you have to go along for the ride so you can clear your mind.

Remember that no one knows us better than ourselves. If you think you aren’t feeling right, or perhaps you aren’t dealing with a situation like you should be, don’t be afraid to admit you might have one of the many psychological health disorders that are out there. Sometimes, it just takes a few months with a qualified psychological health professional. You may just need to find someone to help you unravel the tangle in your mind so you can go on with your happy and productive life. Don’t feel ashamed, and don’t think it makes you less of a person. Our minds work in mysterious ways, and no one can say you are anything less than normal just because they don’t understand what you are going through.

Cholesterol: Understanding It

Your levels of cholesterol need to be checked regularly by your doctor if you happen to be one of those with a health and lifestyle that makes you vulnerable to heart-related ailments. The doctor’s diagnosis and final report will obviously consist of medical language, figures and numbers which he will need to simplify for you to understand. It will be from the result of this analysis that you will be able to appreciate your health condition and the progress you are making if you are already on treatment or medication.

If you find all this very confusing it is possible to acquire a home cholesterol testing kit that can be used in the comfort of your home as long as you learn how to understand the figures and the results. The L stands for low density lipid cholesterol which is referred to as bad cholesterol and should be kept as low as possible. This makes up about sixty five to seventy five percent of your total cholesterol, which you should ensure the total number is at least lower than a hundred and thirty.

If you are obese and have a family history of heart disease this number should be kept even lower than one hundred as bad cholesterol or LDL is the cause of most heart attacks and you should watch your diet carefully as well.

The second number is the one for good cholesterol or HDL, which stands for high density lipid cholesterol which is easily remembered by the capital letter H as standing for healthy. For the males this should be thirty five and forty for the females but higher than this is favourable for both genders. A program of exercising your body is essential in assisting raising the levels of the HDL. If you smoke you would do well to keep away from this dangerous habit. The last number is your total cholesterol level that will add up both your good and bad levels.

A small percentage of people also have very low levels of cholesterol in the blood stream due to Abetalipoproteinemia, a rare genetic disease. This is a condition that mainly affects the Jewish population and not only causes low cholesterol levels, but also causes vitamin deficiencies and an inability to grow and gain weight at a normal rate.

Low cholesterol, lastly, can be caused if medications used to treat high cholesterol are used improperly. Maintain a good normal balance of the high and low density lipid levels and you will be able to keep the cholesterol levels under control. Should there be need for any medication your doctor will advice to assure you of a healthy and longer life.

Understand the Benefits of an Vinyl Mattress Cover

Sleeping through the night with peace of mind knowing your allergies will not act up is one of the luxuries in life that will be can be achieved with a vinyl mattress cover. A good and spacious bed and comfortable mattress are essential too, but the quality of the cover will also determine how pleasant your sleep would be.

As it is the main part of the bed that you will be in contact with while you are laying down, your mattress cover should specifically be of your preference. While the cotton and silk varieties are considered to be quite popular in this matter, a vinyl mattress cover would be perfect for those who would like to try something easily stylish and greatly comfortable as well.

Sleep is made easier with these covers as the fabric itself is quite comfortable. While some may have hesitations regarding the consistency of the fabric, cloth manufacturers have already overcome the hurdle of vinyl being a synthetic fabric. Vinyl nowadays offers breathability, which translates to comfort. Those who would like something to shield themselves against the often itchy consistency of mattresses would find it easy to turn to a vinyl mattress cover for comfort.

A vinyl mattress cover is also an ideal choice to ensure the longevity of your mattress. As they help in securing the mattress’ original structure by providing a tight cover, your mattress will retain its shape longer, thereby letting you enjoy plush and plump sleeping quarters. The quality of vinyl is very durable too, which makes it effective in securing the structure of your cover. Its toughness will also protect the mattress from damage inflicted upon it like jumping, or even sharp objects piercing through it, as long as the effort behind it is minimal.

Vinyl covers will also perfect for those who are sensitive to allergies caused by dust and dust mites. As mattresses are often considered to be breeding grounds of dust and the little critters that come along with them, it would be ideal for anyone to use these covers to protect them from such. Not for containing the dust but to avoid it from accumulating within the mattress. This would prove to be helpful as well in providing good breathing air while in bed.

As vinyl mattress covers are very durable, they are also very great in dealing with stains. The quality of the fabric protects greatly from liquids and spills, and also works against bed wetting, especially if you have children who are prone to doing so. While basic white or plain covers are mostly preferred, there are those who prefer getting covers with unique designs, which led to a number of fancy prints made available in the market.

While one can assume that vinyl mattress covers can always be pristine, they get dirty too. But cleaning them is easy. Minor spills can be easily removed with disinfected water on a washcloth. Washing them will not be difficult too, as they can be removed easily through zipper closures and can work well with detergents and other laundry soaps.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes, a disease that affects millions of people in the United States is analogous to a fire starting in a house. The fire fighter shows up. He is expecting from his report, to find a fire in one room. The fire that has started in one room of the house quickly spreads to the hallway, then the back room, then to a bed room. If the fire isn’t contained quickly, there is a real possibility of losing the entire house.

Diabetes Is the Fire and the House Is Your Body

For those suffering from diabetes, like the fire, you must be on constant guard by attending to your blood sugar level. Diabetes is an insidious disease that left unchecked, will attack and destroy your body organs, cause coronary heart disease, and may even cause blindness through retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Excessive blood glucose levels over time contribute to swelling and pressure to the blood vessels in the retina. As these vessels expand, much like a balloon with too much air in it, they start to bleed. This causes damage over time and can eventually lead to a damaged retina. This is not like getting chest pains; you don’t get lots of warning, and the situation if not identified, can lead to permanent damage to the retina and ultimately blindness.

Is There a Way to Detect This Problem?

Every diabetic whether a type one or type two, should have an eye examination at least once a year. The damage caused to the retina starts the day you become diabetic. Because you may not see any change or feel any symptoms means nothing. The clock is ticking and you need to check with an ophthalmologist each year to monitor the change. Most specialists will tell you that if you are in tight control with blood sugars, with an A1C level of seven or below, you won’t see any signs of damage till about year fifteen.

What Are the Treatment Options?

The best thing you can do is keep your blood sugars in tight control and don’t gain a lot of weight. Every strain you put on your system, whether it’s from out of control blood sugars, to excess weight, to high blood pressure, increases pressure on your entire system including the blood vessels in your eyes. Short of tight blood sugar control, laser surgery is also an option. Once the bleeding starts from blood vessels even this surgery is only a temporary solution.

Good News About Treatment With Omega 3 Fish Oil

New medical research from the Children’s Hospital of Boston has found that a diet rich in Omega 3 fish oil has shown less abnormal blood vessel growth to the retina. This finding is in line with other medical studies promoting the anti-inflammatory effects of Omega 3 fish oil. The fatty acids found in fish oil have a direct impact on fighting inflammation in every part of the body including the eyes. The effect of rich Omega 3 fish oil is essentially like letting some of the air out of a balloon that is expanding to the point of bursting. It only stands to reason that this research corroborates earlier findings of the positive effects of fish oil on the arteries of the cardio vascular system. The same theory applies to blood vessels in the eye.

Conclusion

Now that we know that Omega 3 fish oil offers a defense against the potential damage to the retina due to diabetes, it’s time to be proactive and protect your eye sight before trouble comes knocking.

Hypertension and Sodium Consumption

Many foods are very high in sodium, so high in fact that it seems to be the norm to eat food without thinking about the sodium count. That is of course until you find out that you have hypertension. Some of the signs are extreme headaches and bloating from a combination of blood pressure being elevated and consumption of sodium.

Salt is used in many foods to enhance flavor, salting a steak before grilling is a perfect example of using salt. The problem is so many people have now developed some sort of sensitivity to sodium. The food industry has caught on to the problems of people who are sensitive to sodium and have now developed additional food products that are lower in sodium.

1500 mg is the goal many people are trying to stay under when it comes to sodium. This count restricts people from eating a lot of food. Soy sauce is one ingredient used in many Asian dishes where the sodium count is so high that if you are sensitive to sodium you can not ingest even a tiny amount. One tablespoon of soy sauce can have 1160 mg of sodium, this is 2/3 of a total day worth of sodium in one tablespoon. The low sodium version of soy sauce is still to high to been included in any diet with sodium restrictions.

The title low sodium simply means it has less sodium than the regular food product. Low sodium can still be very high per serving in relation to trying to eat a lower sodium diet.

Sodium can be found in almost every single food you consume.

  • Fruits and vegetables contain sodium, therefore it is very important to understand that if you are trying to consume less than 1500 mg of sodium, the reality is if you eat snacks you should plan on eating 300 – 400 mg of sodium. This will leave you with 1100 – 1200 mg to be consumed over three meals.
  • Pasta sauce is one of those ingredients where you read the marketing about each serving of sauce containing valuable nutrition and vegetables. When you read the label you will be surprised to know one serving (¼ cup) of pasta sauce can contain approximately 50% of your remaining sodium count. This does not include the sodium that is in the pasta or side dish.

If you are sensitive to sodium for any reason, take time to read the label before you purchase any type of food. It may take longer to grocery shop at first but your health will improve by reading the label before you put it in the cart.
Follow my life as I deal with being recently diagnosed (April 12 2011) with high blood pressure (224/109). I need to lose 100 pounds while changing my food habits to reduce my sodium intake to under 1500 mg and eat foods without preservatives.

Acne – How It Affects Teenage Girls

Most teenage girls are susceptible to the problems of acne. Acne is just another aspect of growing up and girls seem to suffer in more ways than boys. Girls are just realising that they are becoming attractive to boys and when they discover that they are breaking out with acne, they will worry about their future.

Girls will normally see the blemishes on their faces as a signal that they are not going to be attractive to boys and this can often lead to depression. Teenagers are prone to be unsure of themselves and the added problems of acne do not help the situation.

In these days when there are many ads on television showing beautiful models extolling the value of this or that beauty product, a teenage girl can wonder why she has the various blemishes associated with acne. She will naturally resent what is happening to her looks at a time when so much is changing in her body.

Parents are in a position to help their teenage daughters through this difficult part of their lives. Listening to their thoughts and complaints with a sympathetic understanding can be of great benefit. The positive attributes of their daughters should be discussed so that they will realise that all is not negative for them.

Parents can assist too by helping the teenager girl to understand what can cause acne. It was always thought that diet alone was the cause, but this is not the case. Diet is just one aspect but is not the only culprit.

Hormonal changes in the body are really the major causes of the problem. This is why teenager girls are the main sufferers, but adults are also liable to suffer. During puberty, one hormone in particular, androgen, seems to be the major player. This hormone causes the sebaceous glands to expand and the result is the production of excess oil. It is this oil when mixed with bacteria and dead skin on the surface that will block the pores in the skin.

When the bacteria in these blocked pores multiply, inflammation happens and shows on the surface of the skin.

It is normally at this point that the teenage girl will turn to over the counter remedies. Some of these will work and some will just be a waste of money. To be honest, the drug companies revel at this time, as when one product fails to produce the desired results, another is purchased and so the merry-go-round begins.

After some period has elapsed and the acne is still present, the teenage girl would consult a dermatologist. These experts will often achieve results, using prescribed medication which is not cheap. Some will try to get to the root of the trouble and investigate diets, habits in regard to skin care and other aspects.

At least they are trying to remove the actual cause of the acne, not just treating the symptoms. Teenage girls affected by acne go through agony and they need all the help available.

Just like any other problem within the body, acne can only really be cured by removing the cause. Chinese acupuncturists have always looked for the cause of a problem and treated that. We should all take note of this approach, after all Chinese doctors have been successfully sorting out ailments for many years. Unfortunately Western medicine has lost sight of this basic understanding.

The successful curing of acne does not take place overnight and for a teenage girl who wants miracle cures, this is not really acceptable. So parents should guide the teenager in this regard.

Acne No More is the holistic and natural way to cure acne. This method was created by a one time sufferer who researched until he found out how to cure himself. It can remove the problem faced by teenage girls.

Famous People With Asperger’s Syndrome

Did you know that there are actually a lot of famous people…well known, successful people…who either have Asperger’s syndrome or have been rumored to have Asperger’s?

It is helpful to take a look at some of these people to show us that having Asperger’s syndrome does not have to get in your way of being successful. In fact, sometimes it is the very traits in Asperger’s that can make you successful.

1. Bill Gates

Bill Gates, one of the richest people in the world today, is the founder of Microsoft. Gates shows many traits of Asperger’s, although he has never been formally diagnosed.

Gates was always more interested in machines than people as a kid, and had a single minded focus on figuring out how the computer worked. The first computers were just being developed when Gates was growing up, and he spent hours at his school’s computer trying to figure out how to build software for it and learn how it worked.

His tenacity would serve him well later on as he developed the software that would become the basis of Microsoft. Videos show Gates rocking on television, and point out his incredible memory as a child. Gates had little time for social niceties and always preferred to get to the point of things.

2. Dan Aykroyd

The famous actor and screenwriter Dan Aykroyd has also admitted to having both Asperger’s and Tourette’s, diagnosed when he was 12. In an NPR interview with Terry Gross in 2004, Aykroyd said that he still had
a “touch” of Asperger’s, although he had mostly grown out of the physical tics that go with Tourette’s.

Dan was one of the original members of  “Saturday Night Live” and stared in such notable films as “The Blues Brothers” and “Ghostbusters”.

3. Tim Page

Tim Page is a well-known music critic and author. He has won a Pulitzer prize for his work writing music criticism for the Washington Post. His memoir, “Parallel Play,” talks about his life growing up with a feeling that something was not quite right, that he was alone in a way he couldn’t quite describe. He was not diagnosed with Asperger’s until age 45.

Page says that “it would be easier for me to improvise an epic poem before a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden than to approach an attractive stranger across the room and strike up a conversation.”  (“Parallel Play,” Tim Page). As a child, Page was obsessed with details of things, music, and movies, and was mostly oblivious to the social world around him.

4. Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin has made many great innovations in humane animal handling systems and more humane ways to slaughter livestock. She is also a celebrated author and has done much for awareness of Asperger’s and autism.

People like Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Thomas Jefferson, and Steven Spielberg have also been suspected to, but not have been confirmed, to have Asperger’s.

Having Asperger’s syndrome does not limit your ability to do anything that you want to in your life. As we can see from these examples, some of the traits of Asperger’s syndrome – focus, single-mindedness, and perseverance – can actually be a blessing in disguise in achieving your goals as many famous people with Asperger’s syndrome have found.

Do You Want To Go For Dental Implants?

Dealing with missing teeth is not a problem anymore. Dentistry had made a great deal of improvement and has been able to bring about a solution for the patients who have lost their teeth. Now, tooth loss could occur due to a number of reasons like accidents, injuries or poor oral health. Since a long time people have been using dentures as a replacement for missing teeth but thanks to the advancement in science and technology, dental implants have been developed and introduced. The reasons why dental implants have become so popular is that they have a lot of advantages to offer and some of them have been discussed below.

Dental implants are as functional as a healthy set of natural teeth. You will be able to chew your food in a properly no matter how tough it is. You will also find it easier to talk confidently because you do not have to live in the fear that the implants could fall off any moment. Using dentures is extremely problematic because they do not stay in place for long. Even using adhesives like Fixodent are not able to save the situation. Hence attending social functions becomes really difficult because you need to converse with a lot of people and eat with them.

It is absolutely needless to say, you look a lot better with the dental implants. Say for example a young man or a woman has lost a tooth or multiple numbers of teeth due to an accident. They completely isolate themselves and refuse to spend time with their friends and family. This happens mainly because they are extremely ashamed of the way they look when they open their mouth. But thanks to dental implants, they will be able to lead better and healthier lives and there will be a significant amount of rise in their confidence too.

Some of you might think that getting dental implants would mean spending long hours just taking care of your teeth; you are far from the reality my friend. They require the same kind of dental hygiene like normal teeth. Dentures on the other hand need to be cleaned on a regular basis and have to be soaked apart from maintaining your normal oral hygiene routine.

Your dentist though will have to examine your oral health to make sure that you will be able to support the treatment as a certain number of healthy tissues will be required for the purpose.

Tools For Blackhead Extraction

Removing blackheads can be an awkward and difficult process, especially if you try to do it with your fingertips or a tissue. Thankfully, there are several tools you can use to help with blackhead extraction. In order to protect your skin as much as possible, only extract the blackhead after it has visibly burst out from beneath the skin. Attempting to extract a blackhead too early can cause infection and/or inflammation as alien bacteria can enter your skin.

Whichever method or tool you choose to use for blackhead extraction, make sure that the affected area is clean, and that your pores have been opened. To open the pores, wash your skin with hot water, and then give yourself a facial steam by placing a thick warm towel over your face and holding your face over a bowl of hot steamy water.

Tissues and Fingers
Using tissues and fingers to remove blackheads is perhaps the most well-known method of blackhead extraction. Once your pores are opened, cover your fingers completely with a tissue, making sure that your fingertips will not touch your face. Place your fingers on either side of the blackhead and gently push until the blackhead pops out. Do not try and force the blackhead out if it does not come out easily, this will just injure your skin.

Metal Loop Extractors
These are stainless steel rods with a metal loop at either end. You can purchase them from any pharmacy and should be used only with great caution. The loop is placed over the blackhead and used to force it out of the pore. Very gently pressure should be used as rough treatment will only damage the skin.

Blackhead Removal Strips
This is a form of blackhead extraction that has become exceedingly popular. These strips use a powerful glue to tear the blackheads out of the skin pores. To use, wet the strip and stick it over any area afflicted with blackheads. Leave for the recommended amount of time and then remove the strip from your skin. Be careful as sensitive skin can react badly to the force of these strips.

Blackhead Removal Guns
These tools use a strong vacuum force to literally suck the blackhead out of your skin. The makers of these tools maintain that they do no harm to the skin, while being highly effective, but most people claim that unless used in conjunction with other forms of blackhead extraction, these tools are largely mostly useless as the suction force is not powerful enough.

Autism: What to Look For, Resources to Help

Most moms worry about giving birth to a healthy baby while pregnant. Not me, I went through those nine months without a care in the world but earned my worry stripes at delivery. Thankfully my son did well enough to go home with me after a short stint in the neonatal intensive care unit.

I remember watching him as he grew and worried constantly if he might be autistic. No there was no real reason for the worry other than the New Mom Neurosis.

Autism is a Hodge-podge diagnosis for brain development abnormalities. The disease spectrum ranges from seemingly well adjusted kids to profoundly impaired kids requiring a lot of specialized care. Cause is unknown but thought to have both genetic and environmental causes.

The common denominator in autism is poor social development. Here are a few things to look out for in a child as young as one year old. Your child will not look you in the eye.

1. Eye contact or rather the avoidance of eye contact is the one the spot way to quickly tell if autism could be underlying.

2. Your child seems to enjoy solitary and repetitive play for hours on end.

3. Your child reacts strangely to sounds or loud noise.

4. Speech delay

5. Queer mannerisms

6. Your child resists being held close or being hugged or kissed

7. Your child will not point to objects or people

None of the symptoms by themselves mean much but if you are noticing two or more behaviors in your child, schedule an appointment with your pediatrician or family doctor. Seek a second opinion if reassurances from your medical provider do not placate your fears. A mom’s intuition is often right.  Early diagnosis goes a long way with minimizing disability from autism.

If your child has officially been diagnosed with autism, its okay to cry and I hope you get a supportive shoulder to cry on. Whatever you do, don’t blame yourself. It’s nothing you did wrong. Scientific evidence has debunked the “Childhood Immunization leading to autism talk”.

What that movement brought on was outbreaks of measles and whooping cough.

What do you do you ask?

1. Connect with advocacy organization like Autism Speaks.

2. Autism support groups online. You can do a Google search

3. State Regional Centers. The name might be different in your state. They are state agencies specifically for special needs children. You will find highly skilled professional and therapist, many with passion for their work and can help your child tremendously. Signing Families, a company founded by a school psychologist can teach sign language to both parent and child to facilitate communication for the non-verbal child.

4. Your local school district. You can actually see your tax dollars at work. Very few private schools can match the depth of special education program of the public school system.

5. Social Security Administration Depending on the level of your child’s disability, he or she might qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Hay Fever Treatment

Like all allergies, the best way to cope with hay fever is to always avoid the things that seem to known to generate a response. Clearly, this certainly isn’t always practical, but minimizing one’s exposure needs to be the basis for good approach. You will find about as many different ways to treat hay fever as there are people that are affected by it. These particular solutions are categorized in 3 major categories: medication, homeopathic solutions (home remedies) and other treatment options.

Medication

As a response to the allergens, the body releases Histamine, which causes the symptoms of Hay fever. Due to this, the quickest way to receive respite might be with an anti-histamine of some type. Anti-histamines combat the effect of histamine and give relief from hay fever symptoms. But nevertheless, you shouldn’t wait until you feel symptoms of hay fever to take an anti-histamine. The reason for this is that when you are beginning to experience allergic reactions, your immune system has already released the histamine and the harm is done. All an anti-histamine has the potential to do now is stop the release of extra histamine. Because of this, anti-histamines are a considerably more helpful remedy for hay fever if used on a regular basis during the allergy season. Such treatments can be employed to minimize and treat allergic rhinitis problems.

Anti-histamines can be found in many types such as pills, inhalers, nebulizers, and even eye-drops. Both over the counter as well as prescription, several well known manufacturers are Clarityn, Benadryl, Zyrtec, Piriteze, Loratadine, Cetirizine, and also Piriton. Similarly, many brands offer acceptable varieties of these items for little ones.

To cope with additional symptoms like nasal congestion and irritation, a decongestant can usually supply relief. Decongestants like pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) can be obtained over the counter in both tablet or liquid form. Another kind of decongestant that has been shown effective are nasal sprays. These are designed to prevent and treat symptoms of Hay fever. Brands such as Afrin and Allerclear are some of the better known nasal sprays available. A clear nose can make you feel better at once. Beware of overusing these items though. Nasal Sprays can have negative side affects like insomnia, higher blood pressure and an elevated heart-rate. Whats more, nasal sprays can actually complicate matters if used too often, creating a rebound effect. When used appropriately these decongestants can help immensely.

As you can see, allergy and hay fever medication can be found over the counter in numerous forms, plus for more difficult cases prescription strength versions are accessible and effective.

Home Remedies

For modest cases, hay fever may be dealt with sufficiently using simple home remedies along with allergy-proofing your home. However, even for people with severe cases these methods ought to prove invaluable for controlling the effects of allergy symptoms. There are a number of home remedies which have been found useful in controlling the effects of hay fever. Here are a few of them:

  • Gargling warm salt water might help a sore throat
  • Herbs like Ginger (can help strengthen the immune system) along with Garlic (a natural decongestant)
  • Using lip balm around your nostrils
  • Keeping all things in your house clean – especially dusting and washing the floor coverings often
  • Have the windows and doors closed and use the A/C during hay fever season.

Other Solutions

In addition to medications and home remedies there are still some alternative treatment practices which have produced results. Allergy shots, or immunotherapy has a great success rate and also might be more or less a cure after a long duration of treatment. This method works by incrementally exposing your immune system to the allergen and therefore successively lessening your reaction to it. Some people have also had success by a number of herbal remedies and supplements, while other people even claim that such things as hypnosis and acupuncture have helped.

It is incredibly difficult to prevent hay fever as airborne plant pollen and spores induce it. Nevertheless treatment options exist to make it easier to control and treat your symptoms. Knowledge of precisely what provokes your allergies and getting a treatment plan set up beforehand will help curtail the consequences they have on your life.
